History
Inaugurated in 1875, the Kentucky Derby serves as the legendary opening leg of the American Triple Crown, preceding the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
Often referred to as "The Run for the Roses," the 2026 renewal marks the 152nd consecutive running of the event, maintaining the longest continuous sporting tradition in the United States.
Contested over 1 1/4 miles (approximately 2,000m) on the dirt track at the iconic Churchill Downs, the race is famous for its massive 20-horse field, the largest in North American graded stakes racing. This density creates a high-pressure environment where horses must navigate a chaotic first turn and maintain a blistering pace.
The race requires a rare combination of raw speed and the "route" stamina needed to handle the classic distance for the first time in a Thoroughbred's career. While the event was originally 1 1/2 miles, it was shortened in 1896 to its current distance. The speed standard remains the legendary 1:59.40 set by Secretariat in 1973.
The Derby's significance extends beyond the $5 million purse; it is the definitive test of the three-year-old crop. The race has served as the springboard for icons of the turf, including:
Sir Barton (1919): The first Triple Crown winner.
Secretariat (1973): The "Big Red" machine who set the track record.
American Pharoah (2015): Ended a 37-year Triple Crown drought.
Today, the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" points system dictates the field, ensuring only the most consistent performers earn a spot in the starting gate. The Kentucky derby has become an international event, with the point system rewarding runners who win specific races in the UK and Dubai.
It remains the most-watched horse race in the Western Hemisphere, cementing its status as the "Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports."
Top Contenders
RENEGADE
TRAINER: Todd Pletcher
JOCKEY: Irad Ortiz Jr
Renegade is the expected favourite for this year’s Kentucky Derby, and there’s good reason for it too. He won the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, a key lead-up race, where he was wide on the turn and had a burst of speed to kick away and win by four lengths. More tellingly, his jockey Irad Ortiz Jr had the option to ride a number of horses for this race, but he chose Renegade. Irad Ortiz Jr is the best jockey in America and the only thing missing on his glittering CV is the Kentucky Derby.
Barrier one could be an issue for the son of Into Mischief, as his preferred position is in the midfield, he could run into some serious traffic and get held up for a run. However, with the much anticipated fast tempo, the race could play out nicely for Renegade, he’ll just need some luck.
THE PUMA
TRAINER: Gustavo Delgado
JOCKEY: Javier Castellano
The Puma is one of the more fascinating runners coming into this race, following his photo finish loss to Commandment in the Florida Derby. If there is any silver lining for The Puma it’s that both Mage in 2023 and Sovereignty in 2025 finished second in the Florida Derby and went on to win the Kentucky Derby. Two starts back, he defeated Further Ado in the Tampa Bay Derby who went on to win by 11-lengths in the Arkansas Derby.
Out of the main chances he has drawn the best and will get the ideal run in transit. Expect the Gustavo Delgado trained galloper to settle around midfield and stalk the leaders, with the much anticipated frantic pace he should be rounding the corner chasing down the leading runners.
CHIEF WALLABEE
TRAINER: William Mott
JOCKEY: Junior Alvarado
Chief Wallabee has been improving with every start. Last start he was beaten within a length in the Florida Derby behind The Puma and Commandment. Seven of the last 20 winners have come through the Florida Derby, making it the key lead-up race for the Kentucky Derby. With a favourable post-position, Chief Wallabee should be able to land in a comfortable position close enough to the lead, and if they over do it out front he could be sitting behind smoking his pipe and descend on the leaders late. The main reason why the locals like him is because of his breeding. He has the most stamina-rich bloodline of the field, featuring US champions Constitution, Medaglia D’oro and Ghostzapper. Plus, his trainer and jockey are the exact winning combination of last year’s Kentucky Derby.
The concern is that he has failed to defeat key rivals in his past two starts, finishing second behind Commandment in the Fountain of Youth and, as mentioned before, third behind The Puma and Commandment in the Florida Derby. He has only ever raced on fast dirt tracks, so his ability on rain affected tracks are unknown.
FURTHER ADO
TRAINER: Brad Cox
JOCKEY: John Velazquez
Arguably the most talented horse in the field, Further Ado is coming into the Kentucky off the back of an 11-length romping in the Blue Grass. The question is, will he be able to repeat his dominant performance?
He is drawn extremely wide, meaning he’ll most likely have to use up more energy and speed to find a position. If jockey John Velazquez elects to ride the horse colder than usual, then there is a risk he will be too far off the pace to make any meaningful impression on the race. The main concern the Americans have with Further Ado is his breeding. The Kentucky Derby’s profile of Further Ado states, “Further Ado is a legitimate contender, but handicappers should understand they're at least partially betting against a historical pattern with the sire line”. The sire in question is Gun Runner, whose progeny usually peak later on in their careers. But, after an 11-length win how could you not like Further Ado? He has shown impressive ability and will be hard to beat.
DANON BOURBON
TRAINER: Manabu Ikezoe
JOCKEY: Atsuya Nishimura
The Kentucky Derby will be a homecoming for locally-bred Danon Bourbon, who was purchased by Danon Co. Ltd in Japan. He has currently had three starts for three wins and is one of three international runners (Wonder Dean and Six Speed) who will be looking to become the first non-American runner to win the Kentucky Derby.
The son of Maxfield has many things in his favour. Danon Bourbon is very versatile in the sense he can be ridden close to the speed or midfield, either the preferred position to win the Kentucky Derby. He also has experience racing on a muddy dirt track and in a large field. For all American horses the Kentucky Derby is their first experience at a large field and there is an uncertainty whether they can handle the pressure of a big field. He will have to defy history to win the Kentucky Derby, but he brings the best CV an international runner has ever had coming into the Kentucky Derby.
COMMANDMENT
TRAINER: Brad Cox
JOCKEY: Luis Saez
Off the back of four consecutive victories, Commandment comes into the Kentucky Derby as the field’s highest points earner. His most notable victories were in the Florida Derby and Fountain of Youth Stakes, the exact lead-up races last year's winner Sovereignty won. In the Florida Derby he beat The Puma and Chief Wallabee, two horses that are very well fancied in the market.
The concern with the Brad Cox trained galloper is that both Irad Ortiz Jr and Flavien Prat, two of the best jockeys in the nation, have jumped on other mounts, overlooking Commandment.
